My Story
Hello, I’m John Lloyd, a product designer, passionate about designing digital experiences that are simple, enjoyable and drive a positive change in the world. Although I am a dual citizen to the US and the UK, I grew up moving around the Middle East, completing high school in Abu-Dhabi, UAE. I have a Bachelor of Science Business degree from Northeastern University with a concentration in Information Systems and Management. Visual arts has always been a part of my life since I was a child. In high school, I honed my understanding of space, perspective and color through a 2 year college-level course called Visual Arts Higher Level International Baccalaureate (IB).
At Northeastern University it is mandatory that students from all colleges complete at least two co-ops (6 month long internships) in order to graduate. As a sophomore I did my first co-op at a small boutique company in Spain, where, once it was known that I had an eye for design, was moved swiftly to a graphic design role. It was in that moment, in 2014, where I realized UI design and working on software was my calling. Ever since then I have been designing using Photoshop and then Sketch, almost every day, and it has become my main hobby. After completing my co-op in Spain, I immediately started work on my start-up idyoma, as I experienced first-hand the problem language learners had when trying to reach fluency in a foreign language. When enrolled in regular classes and in-between co-ops, I would spend my time freelancing. I did UI/graphic design jobs for companies such as Encore Labs and Lampix. I co-oped at Liberty Mutual and then went on to work at Sanofi Genzyme and Abbott Labs. Over the last 8 years I have done UI work in a range of fields, such as mobile apps, education, data analytics, medical devices, 3D and more, with environments ranging from young start-ups to mature Fortune 100 companies.
As a product designer, I understand that the perfect design not only involves visual aesthetics and beautiful animations, but an interface that solves a real problem. This requires a deep level of empathy, which I believe I have refined through my experiences of living abroad and by the sheer volume of products and UI I have tested against user feedback.
I personally enjoy working on projects that require both strategy as well as visual design. I love working on problems from the initial idea to supporting the team of developers and finally seeing the designs through to completion with a pixel perfect focus. My dream is to become a domain expert in my field able to move among the process from user research, to designing, to shipping and analyzing results.
